For a Brighter City

ABOUT ME

My name is Axel Arvizu and I’m running for Univerisity-Rosedale Ward 11 councillor. I was raised by an immigrant single mother with very limited resources. We experienced just about every single challenge I can think of. I am the founder and principal of a custom home building company that specializes in alternative housing such as laneways and a food manufacturing business that got its starts in Kensington Market. I am husband to an amazing wife, a father to a wonderful kid (and another one on the way), a friend and an avid traveler who likes studying what works around the world.

I attended Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University). I am a resident of University-Rosedale. I live, work and play in Ward 11.

I am not chasing a job because I didn’t get elected in the last provincial elections. I am not a conservative, not a liberal, and I'm not a politician. I am a business oriented person who believes that through hard work, communication and determination, we can steer this city in the right direction.

I have ideas, experience, and the drive and determination to make Ward 11 a place where we can raise our children and have a better sense of safety and community . I hope you give me the opportunity to work for you as your city councillor.

Things that matter

My priority is listening to you. I will always make time to talk, call back, write back, answer any of your questions and concerns. My platform includes but is not limited to these items which I find highly important.

Transit

Continuing expansion, amalgamation and increased service for transit riders in Toronto, while keeping on budget.  We are a growing city and the future is in transit. If we want to be a leading city, we need to look at London and NYC and we ought to build our transit infrastructure.

Garbage Recycling

Green Initiatives

Planting trees city programs.

Mandatory recycling programs for businesses and condo buildings, etc. Did you know that a large majority of businesses, including restaurants and condo buildings, do not recycle because it’s more expensive for them than to just mix recycling with garbage? Improve the design of new installed garbage/recycling/compost public bins.

Safety

I would shift resources and emphasis to mental health and drug rehabilitation instead of programs such as safe injection sites.

Invest in communities and community organizations that create opportunities for young people.

Work with various city departments in order to put an end to violence in this city, especially gun violence.

Bike Lanes

I fully support more designated bike lanes. We need to plan out more bike lanes strategically located to help alleviate traffic congestion while keeping the safety of riders in mind.

Building a House

Housing

Housing should be affordable and attainable. I plan to advocate and work with building departments to ease basement apartment conversions. I also plan to improve alternative housing options such as laneway and garden suites so that families can stay together and/or cool down the renters and sellers' market conditions.

Bubbles

Parks and dog areas

We need green spaces in Toronto. More places for kids to play ball,  for dog to run free and young adults to be active. Developers should account for this when they are building that skyscraper condo tower. Having a beer at the park with your picnic should also be OK.

Local Businesses

Help Strengthen businesses within our communities to keep them open and thriving.

Businesses are a big part of what makes and defines our neighbourhoods. Little Italy, Koreatown, The Annex, Kensington Market, Baldwin Village, University, Yorkville, Harbord Village, Rosedale would not be what they are if it weren't for the local businesses. It is also a big part of why outsiders come visit.
